C-U Potters’ Club
February 23, 2011 Membership Meeting Agenda
Officers Reports:
Secretary- Approval of January minutes, motion by Cathy C. with second by Rachel.
Treasurer- report on line. Chen notes that budget is based on the income from having 43 members or more per term. Other income sources will be needed and purchases may be delayed while membership is down. Clay order will be delayed two weeks which will generate a bill for same in about 6 weeks. This will allow time for two upcoming projects to pay into the treasury.
Membership- Club has received a few inquiries. 36 current members.
Standing Committee reports:
Glaze- Bev unable to attend. Report:
-Will need cobalt Oxide and Tin Oxide before the next time glazes need made.
-PLEASE clean lids and splatters on other surfaces when you glaze!
- Excel spreadsheet is in progress which will help track glaze ingredients for
reordering.
- Rutile Green passed food safety test. Turquoise has small amount of leaching
and will be replaced by Rutile Green. Food safety test tiles are in basement.
Firing- Jay unable to attend. Report:
-Firings are going well. Jay thanks Ingrid and Kristi for excellent work and
cooperation on the committee.
-Any Laguna items members requested for Jay to order will be passed on to
Cathy to go in with the clay order. Double check with her if questions.
-Remember that there is a priority shelf for firing if needed.
- A thermocoupler will be ordered from Amaco. Contact Jay if you want
any glazes, etc. from the Amaco catalog to be added to this order.
-Delay on setting up Kristi's kiln. Hopefully will be done in the next two weeks.
Clay- Cathy reports that red clay is running low however several boxes of white are available. Clay order delay means that members have two more weeks to get orders for individual items to Cathy. Please use white clay for now and future orders will be predominately red clay. Pug mill will be changes over to red when current surplus of white clay is used. Cathy thanks club members who provided new screen for clay bucket and new rolling bucket. (Phil and ??)
Clean-up and Maintenance- Linda reports that committee work is going well but there continues to be problems with individuals cleaning up after working. Paul expresses frustration with people not cleaning up floors after throwing and glazing. Please clean up thoroughly and remind others to do same when you notice problems! Signs will be posted in the studio for use and clean-up of the slab roller, and for cleaning instructions. Hand brooms are available in the kiln area for cleaning clay trimmings etc. but brooms should not be used for clay dust.
Website- (per Bev) Will put Sunday open houses on Web when final decision. Can put
up sign-up for same if desired.
Sales- Rashmi and Deepa unable to attend. Discussion of packing and storing sale items and tracking how long items have been around and unsold. Ideas for how to track this were given and discussion of whether it really made any difference as pieces don't "expire". No resolution or changes made. Amber is working on a new pricing list for sales items.
President's report-Rachel reports two income sources which will come in during March. Ingrid is doing pottery classes for the Hope Community which will generate about $150. for the club after expenses. Rachel will be throwing for a visual illustration for the Stone Creek Church's worship services on March 27. This will generate $300. for the club. Linda will assist her and others are welcome. The first service begins at 9am and the church is located at the corner of Race and Winsor. Both events will be opportunities to advertise the club.
Boneyard Arts Festival is April 7-10. Sat. the 9th is Urbana day so this will be the main day for studio sale (10am -7pm) but we will also have sale time on Sunday afternoon the 10th. information and sign-up will be on the website.
Taste of Champaign is June 17-19. Rachel has not had answers to calls and emails to the park district about this event so will try to get details from them in person next week. A volunteer will be needed to be Raku chair for this event.
Old Business:
-Individual Sales- No meeting of persons interested in revisiting this has been scheduled yet.
-Studio Guest policy review: Chen suggested (by email) $10 fee per visit, no more than one bag clay used, 3 guest pieces per club firing, guest must sign waiver (same as members). host responsible for supervision and clean up. Rachel suggests this may need more discussion and could be debated on email.
-Open studio days- Decision made to have open studio on second Sunday afternoons. Time not decided, probably around 2-4 or 5. Details will be posted on-line with sign up.
-Contest update- Amber announces a "bank" contest. Piggies and non-piggies welcome! Banks should be completed by May 1. They will be displayed in the studio where members can then "vote" by putting pennies into the bank or banks they like. Winner will be announced at the May membership meeting and money placed in banks as votes will be added to the club treasury. Chen is pretty excited about hauling a bunch of pennies to the bank so he encourages all to vote often! Contest details will be on the web.
-Club social events- None planned for now as we are entering a busy season of other activities. Individuals are welcome to plan lavish occasions for which the rest of us will just show up!!
New Business:
-? Having a "non-working" membership category for a limited number of people who
would pay a higher fee (suggested $200) to belong without committee
responsibilities. This was moved to the category of "So many opinions, so little time!"
-Several ideas discussed about membership building activities. Cathy C. has contacted David Adcock at Urbana Adult Ed about offering a Pottery Class at the studio. She will present a proposal for same for a vote by the membership at the March meeting. Urbana Adult Ed requires final class info by July 4 for fall 2011 classes.
Linda and Sara will prepare a photo display book for events and Kristi and Phil will work on flyers. Rachel will do new business cards. A box of these items will be kept in the studio for members to use to promote the club. The items being created will be presented at the March meeting.
