Clay Committee
Welcome to the Clay Committee. The main responsibility of this committee is to recycle all types of clay used in the studio. Members of this committee are required to sign up for two to three weeks of committee work during a session, coming in at least three to four times during each of those weeks, for a total of approximately eight hours of committee work during a session. A two-month calendar to sign up for work weeks and a binder with committee information and work log sheets are located above the pug mill.
Training for new committee members will be coordinated with the chair.
Clay Committee Responsibilities
- Recycle clay:
- White
- Rotate clay through buckets
- Pour prepared buckets onto white plaster drying tables
- Pug clay from tables when it's ready
- Red
- Rotate clay through buckets
- Pour prepared buckets onto red plaster drying table
- Wedge clay from table when it's ready
- Raku
- Rotate clay through buckets
- Pour prepared buckets on to raku plaster drying tray
- Wedge clay from tray when it's ready
- White
- Wipe down clay bins
- Keep wedging canvas clean
- Keep clay bins full using new and/or recycled clay
- Make slip (white and red)
- Notify chairperson if boxed clay supply is low
- Keep clay, clay buckets, wedging tables, and drying tables orderly
Detailed pug mill instructions and committee member instructions are located in the committee binder on the windowsill above the pug mill.
Clay Committee Chair Responsibilities
- Train new committee members on procedures and using the pug mill
- Order clay: white and red from Brickyard, raku from Great Lakes
- Keep track of committee member participation
- Maintain pug mill
- Replace wedging canvas as needed
- Maintain raku clay and recycling as needed (this is mostly necessary in the months just before scheduled raku firings)
